Pickens High School was recently recognized as a 2023-2024 Math Leader School by the Georgia Department of Education. Pickens High was awarded recognition for High School Growth.
"High math proficiency opens doors to countless opportunities for our students,” said Superintendent Dr. Travis Thomas. “We are committed to continuing to provide the resources and environment that foster academic success in all areas of learning."
Math Leader qualifications are based on students achieving the Proficient Learner level or above on the Georgia Milestones mathematics assessments.
Principal Matt Combs said, “This award is a testament to the outstanding talent, hard work, and dedication of our students, as well as the unwavering commitment of our teachers and staff.”
Math Leader qualifications use the Georgia Mathematic Standards of which were an early indicator of the success of the new standards. Students showed strong improvement in mathematics, with scores increasing on six of the seven tests. Several assessments saw particularly high growth, including eight-point increases in eighth-grade math and high-school Algebra.
