Office of the Superintendent

Dr. Rick Townsend

First of all, I want to thank everyone for the warm welcome my family and I have received upon our move to Pickens County.  The community and school system are outstanding.  We are fortunate to have a strong staff in place as we work through this unique time for education.  I was proud to be part of the Pickens High School virtual graduation in May and look forward to supporting our senior class of 2021!  I appreciate all the support from our community members and parents during this time.  I am especially grateful for all the parents, teachers, community, and business leaders that we part of our K-12 educational task force that helped us create a Return to School Plan.  We have established the Pickens Virtual Academy based on parent and community input.

I have visited all of our schools and met quite a few people at work and in the community.  I've met Rotarians, Optimists, Lions, and Kiwanians and feel fortunate to have great service clubs to support our schools and community.  I look forward to working with the Chamber as we prepare our students for the 21st century workforce.  The schools are doing some amazing things inside the classrooms and our labs.  I definitely know I've made the right decision to be part of this great district and community.  I have been amazed at how everyone has held up and worked together to navigate this unprecedented time.

We are going to continue to work hard to support our students and our staff.  I look forward to working with all of you.

To The Pickens County School District Family,
As someone that has served this school system since 1990, I first want to say thank you.  Thank you to the students, parents and staff that makes us this family that I have been a part of for so long.  While I have served all of you in roles ranging from teacher to assistant superintendent to board member over the course of 30 years, when the time arises for me to address everyone in a setting such as this, I never know exactly what to say.  It has been an honor to educate your children and to serve this county.  As I continue to serve you as assistant superintendent, rest assured that I will strive to help create a school system that gives our students the best education available.  While we have been sorely challenged for the past several months, we remain Pickens Strong!
