FAQs

Board of Education

What is the Pickens County Board of Education?
The Pickens County Board of Education is the governing body of Pickens County Schools.  The primary roles of the Board are policy, budget, and hiring of personnel, which are executed under the direction of the school Superintendent.  The Pickens County Board of Education is an individual governing branch and is not affiliated or managed by the Pickens County Commissioners.  To learn more about school boards, visit the Georgia School Boards Association’s website at gsba.com.

Who are my Board members?
The Pickens County Board of Education represents districts throughout the county.  Each year in January, the five Board members elect one of their own to serve as Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Pickens County Board of Education for the coming year.  For information on our Board members, please visit the main Board webpage.

Is the Superintendent a member of the Board?
No.  The organizational structure of the school system as established by the state has given the Board the role of adopting policies and the Superintendent the role of implementing procedures to support the policies.  The Superintendent is a professional educator who is appointed by the Board of Education and serves as the executive secretary to the Board.

When and where are meetings held?  Am I invited?
The public is invited to attend all Board meetings of the school district.  The monthly meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m.  The only exception is June of 2014 where the monthly Board meeting is held on the third Thursday of the month.  Meetings are held at the Pickens County Board Conference Room at 91 D. B. Carroll Street, Jasper, Georgia, unless otherwise noted.   Called Board meetings and worksessions are also scheduled as needed.  For a calendar of regular meeting dates, please visit our website.  For additional information on Board meetings visit our eBOARD site.

What does the Board of Education do?
The Board of Education is charged with providing educational opportunities for the students of Pickens County Schools.  A Board member has no individual power or authority to make decisions or to take action except when acting as a member of the Board during meetings of the Board.  While the Board itself has considerable authority to control and manage the school district, subject to state and federal law, individual Board members away from Board meetings have no legal authority to take action on any school matter.  The Pickens County Board of Education members work collaboratively as a group to provide quality governance to the students, staff, and community.
